PHYSICAL
EDUCATION/LIFE SKILLS INFORMATION SHEET
Welcome
to CMS Physical Education/Life Skills
The purpose of this information sheet is to acquaint you with the procedures and regulations that will help you to do a good job during your enrollment in the CMS physical education/life skills class.
·
To develop an understanding of the rules, concepts and strategies of
various physical activities and sports that include individual, group,
cooperative and fitness experiences.
·
Twice a year the student will participate in a physical fitness test
where the results will be recorded. The
student will be able to view the improvement.
The mile run is part of the physical fitness unit and will be run a
minimum of once per trimester.
·
To develop physical and social skills that allow personal fulfillment
in leisure time.
·
To establish a foundation and develop an awareness of the importance of
physical well-being.
·
To provide participation in a wide variety of physical activities and
sports in order to identify areas of enjoyment and benefit.
·
Grading is based on daily participation, dressing out and
sportsmanship. A student must dress out
daily to participate in P.E. class and when required in the Life Skills
class.
·
If a student does not have P.E. clothes for class, they must utilize the
loaner program. Loaner clothing is
WASHED after each use. If the loaner
clothing is not returned then it must be paid for.
·
In-house detention is utilized if a student refuses to dress out or
participate in class.
·
Each student will receive a trimester grade that consists of a combined
physical education and Life Skills grade.
·
To earn an A+ a student must have an A+ in 5 out of the 6 two-week
grading sessions.
·
Students will also be graded on participation during the Life Skills
lessons.
·
All students will receive 10 points daily.
·
A+’s are given if a student has earned an A+
in 5 out of the 6 two-week grading sessions.
·
There will be 6 grading periods in periods 1-7 in each trimester.
POINT SCALE USED
IN A 2 WEEK GRADING PERIOD:
·
Physical education is primarily based on daily participation, therefore
when a student is absent from P.E. on a regular activity day, one hour of
physical activity is required to make up the lost class time. If a student misses a run day they must make
up the run at school under the supervision of a P.E. teacher. Run make-ups are not an option, failure to
make up a run will result in a grade of an F for that grading period.
·
Students can make up five absent or parent excused days in one 3 week
unit without any grade deductions. After
the 5th day a no-mark will be recored.
· When a student cannot participate in P.E. class for the day a NOTE is required to excuse the student from participating that day. The student will then be assigned written work for the period and will receive full credit if completed with the correct answers. If a student does not have a note to excuse them from participating that day then they will still be assigned written work and will not receive credit until a parent note is brought in.
· Physical education policy allows for parents to write excused notes for THREE consecutive days, thereafter a doctor’s note is required for the student to be excused from class. When students have an excused absence from school, suspension or are unable to participate due to a doctor’s medical, credit may be earned by writing a research paper. The subject of the report will be directly related to the activity missed or to an activity that will be covered in the future. The student will receive an
information sheet that will explain the expectations for the report. A student is not
excused from P.E. class because of
involvement in sports or other activities.
FOR EXAMPLE: a student is not excused from P.E. activities
to “rest up.”
· Homework is not required. Class time will be given.
· If a student is absent during a Life Skills lesson, make up is the same as missing a day of Physical Education.
Students are given a lock to
use during the school year. If they fail
to return it at the end of the year they will be charged a $5.00 replacement
fee.
Students
are:
·
Warned not to let their combinations be known
·
Warned to check that the lock is secured by rolling the tumbler.
·
Warned not to leave large sums of money or valuables in locker.
·
Warned not to share locker unless assigned by a teacher.
Students
are expected:
·
To be on time to class.
·
To follow directions at all times.
·
To be courteous at all times and treat equipment on the field and in
the classroom with care.
·
To refrain from chewing gum or eating food in the gym, locker room, on
the field or in the classroom.
·
To remain in the gym area until the dismissal bell rings.
·
First offense a warning will be given and points may be deducted.
·
Second offense a timeout will be given and points may be deducted.
·
Third offense the student will be sent to in-school detention and
points may be deducted.
·
Fourth offense a phone call home will be made, in-school detention may
be reassigned and points may be deducted.
·
A referral may be given at anytime if the teacher or aide feels that it
is appropriate to the situation.

·

·
The sweatpants must be marked on the left leg. The name may run across or down the leg, but
must be visible when the student is wearing a sweatshirt and follow the

·
CMS shorts and T-shirts are required and can be purchased at the CMS
