IAN FLEMING(1908 - 1964 ) |
|
Ian Lancaster Fleming was born in 1908. He was the son of Valentine Fleming. His grandfather was Robert Fleming, a wealthy Scottish banker. Ian Fleming had unlimited opportunities due to his grandfathers wealth and the fact that the family was privileged to great social status. The family was well respected partly due to the fact that they were hard workers. Ian’s father died in World War I and Winston Churchill wrote his obituary. Fleming attended Eton and won the athletic prizes two years in a row, but he left before graduating. He then attended the Military Academy at Sandhurst, but he left before becoming an officer. He was forced to leave after being caught out after curfew. Ian then continued his schooling in Europe. When he bought a house in the small Australian town of Kitzbulhel he met Forbes and Phyllis Dennis who encouraged him to become his own person. At this time Fleming wrote several short stories and poem, although he did not see himself as an author. His goal was to join the Foreign Service, but he failed the exam. He then became a journalist. In 1939 Fleming took a job working for Naval intelligence. While writing memos and memoirs for the Admiral he was working for, Fleming traveled to many interesting places. When he traveled to Jamaica he knew that was where he wanted to settle down. He bought some land and built a house. He named the house Goldeneye. For six years he spent the winters in Jamaica, he worked for Kemsly newspaper the rest of the time. At age 44 he married Lady Anne Rothermere, who was pregnant with his child. She was a married woman and while waiting for her in Jamaica he wrote his first novel, Casino Royale. For the next 12 years he continued to write Bond novels. In August of 1964 Fleming died at the age of 56 after a life of drinking, smoking, and bad eating habits. He was buried in Seven Hampton. - by 007 |
