Judy Blume

(1938-still alive)

    Judy Blume was born February 12, 1938 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. All of her life she attended various public schools through out Elizabeth. she also attended New York University in 1961 for college. she describes herself growing up as "very shy and fearful", which all changed in fourth grade. She began to get involved in drama , singing, and performing. Her father was a dentist and her mother, a homemaker. She always dreamed of becoming an actress, a cowgirl, or a ballerina. Surprisingly she never even considered becoming a writer. even though she used to make up stories and  act them out with her dolls. Judy never lost her active imagination and her paper dolls were soon replaced with young children. Finally when her children started preschool  she began writing the stories down.

     Through out her life time Judy has written many books and has many influences for them. Judy has written more than twenty - one books, including Are You There God? Its Me Margaret, Tales Of A Fourth Grade Nothing and many more. She says that most of her inspiration comes from her family and children. The family in  Staring Sally J. Freedom As Herself, Judy says is a lot like her own. Also that the  character Shelia in Otherwise Known AS Shelia The Great, shared some of Judy's childhood fears. She also compares herself Margaret in Are You There God? Its Me Margaret. Then there is Fudge, a legend to Judy's greatest fans. She says he is based off her son Larry's younger years.

     Judy has won many awards and done lots of things to help society today. Judy's books have sold over sixty five million copies and been translated into over twenty languages . her books have won over ninety awards, including the "Children's Choice". In 1996 she won the American Library's Association Margaret A. Edwards award. Judy is an active spokesperson against censorship. As well as the founder of the Kid's Fund.

    Today Judy lives on islands in the East Coast. She is accompanied by her husband and grown kids, along with her one grandchild. She also is an active spokesperson against censorship, a thing very close to her heart. Judy says she "tries to write as honestly as she can, and because of this her biggest issue is censorship."
