Carl Hiaasen

          Background

          On March 12, 1953 Carl Hiaasen was born in Plantation, Florida. He was the first of four children to his parents, Patricia and Odel. Right after graduating high school he, married his sweetheart, Connie Lynford. Soon after, he was accepted into Emory University in 1970 where he started his adventure in writing. He added many interesting articles to his school newspaper, The Emory Wheel. Sadly in 1996 he divorced Lynford and in 1999 he remarried to Fenia Clizer. He has one son from each marriage.

           Books

      Hiaasen has written many adults novels  as well as recently writing two children's novels. His first book, Powder Burn, was written in 1981. He has written sixteen  adult novels since. His two children's novels include Flush and Hoot. Hoot has won a Newbery Award as well as The Rebecca Caudill Young Reader's Book Award.

          Now

     Hiaasen is currently living in the Florida Keys. He has had a regular column in the Miami Herald since 1985. His column makes many people mad, including his boss. Surprisingly, he has managed to keep his employment. He is currently working on another children's novel.

      Influences

          Carl Hiaasen got his ideas for his books from his own childhood, growing up in Florida as well as being environmentally aware of his surroundings. He was inspired to become an author from his love to write ever since he was a child. Besides writing, he also owns an Italian restaurant with his wife and sons, plays guitar and writes songs.
