J.R.R. TOLKIEN

(1892 - 1973 )

J.R.R. Tolkien was one of the most known authors ever. Among many other things, he was a professor at Oxford University. He has written The Hobbit and the trilology The Lord Of The Rings. He was born in Bloemfontien, in the Orange Free State. After his father died, they moved to the south-east side of Birmingham. J.R.R. Tolkien had a happy childhood there and it is evident in some of his books. He went to King Edwards School, in Birmingham, along with his brother.

One day while grading papers, one of his students left a page blank and, out of nowhere he wrote, “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.” When he wrote this of course he had to figure out what a hobbit was and what kind of hole it lived in. from this, he told a story of a hobbit that lived in a hole to his children. An unfinished copy of The Hobbit got into the hand of Susan Dagnall and she asked him to finish it. After The Hobbit was a big hit, she asked him to write a sequel to The Hobbit. Thus came The Lord Of the Rings.

              One day Tolkien said:

“ Bilbo Baggins was a hobbit that lived in

a hobbit hole and never went for adventures

until Gandalf the wizard and his dwarves

persuaded him to go. He had a very exiting time

fighting goblins and wargs…and returned home

-rich!”

Tolkien was summarizing his first book The Hobbit, in which Bilbo Baggins was the star. In the last years of his life he was writing Silmarillion a collection of his works of the old world. He died in 1973 leaving Silmarillion unfinished.

Tolkien has written many books but the most well known ones are

  • -The Hobbit
  • -The Fellowship of The Ring
  •  -The Two Towers
  • -The Return of The King
Tolkien was one of the most well known authors of all time and some say the best author of all time.
