Carolyn Mackler

Carolyn Mackler grew up in a small town in western New York. During her childhood her mother and father would tell her their stories of them as children. When she got older she was interested in reading young-adult novels, because she had so many stories in her head she had to express them to the world. When she was a teenager she would run to the library check out 10 books at a time run home make some hot chocolate and cinnamon toast and sit down on her bed and read

Carolyn Mackler got many ideas from eaves dropping on other teenager conversations while walking in Central Park or on the subway. Mackler says, “I’m a professional snoop.” When Carolyn would listen to other teens stories of their problems she would add those in a book. She also got a lot of ideas from her own childhood for example her parents got divorced and one book a girl is struggling because her parents are getting a divorce.

Carolyn Mackler was awarded the Michael L. Printz honor award for her book, “ The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things.” For the way it sends a message to all teenagers in its hilarious and insightful ways. Even though this was the only book with an award the others are still very good. Carolyn Mackler is a great and inspiring author.

Many people inspired Carolyn to write her books. Not just the different variety of teenagers but also her family. Her husband helps her continue to write and because she loved reading all the stories when she was little she wanted to see what it was like to try and write a story or two herself.
