Edgar Allan Poe

(1809 - 1849 )

Poe is best known for his short stories, and poems.  He deserves more credit than most people say.  He virtually created the detective story, and perfected the psychological thriller.  He produced some of the best literary criticism of his time.

Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1809.  Poe's parents were David Poe and Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins.  They were touring actors.  His parents died before he was three years old.  He was taken into the home of a man named John Allen who lived in Virginia.  He went to the University of Virginia but he only stayed for one year because John Allen refused to pay them.

After college he en listed in the army.  He was later relieved and went to West Point, but only lasted for six months.  In 1835 Poe married his cousin Virginia Clemm when she was 13.  She died in 1847.  During this time he was writing fiction and poetry and was successful as a writer and editor.

In the summer of 1849 he revisited Richmond where he lectured.  After his return he was found unconscious on a street in Baltimore.  He was taken to a hospital and died October 7, 1849.  His last words were, "Lord help my poor soul."

A century and a half later and Poe is considered one of the greatest American writers.  Poe's short stories and poems still have an enormous popularity.  He virtually invented the detective story and perfected the horror story.  He also had a world wide influence on literature.
