Phillip Pullman

(1946 - Present)

“Stories are the most important

thing in the world. Without stories, we

wouldn't be human beings at all.”

Phillip Pullman was born in Norwich, England on October 19, 1946. He spent his most of his childhood traveling abroad with his father and stepfather. He traveled to places such as Rhodesia and Australia; he even went on a long sea adventure. When Phillip was eleven his family moved to Harlech to get him a proper education. His English teacher was Professor Enid Jones, to whom he still talks to. When he was young, Phillip would run and explore places around Harlech, and its countryside. When he grew up he went to the Oxford College and studied English. Later becoming a teacher of English there. He started writing during this time, he wrote some school plays and other short stories.

Phillip drew inspiration from everything. The first place that he drew inspiration from was the countryside in Harlech; it inspired his book The Shadow in the North and The Golden Compass. The plays he wrote while teaching inspired his first book The Ruby in the Smoke. The books that most influenced his writings were Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, Sherlock Holmes, and The Grimms Fairy Tales. He also finds inspiration from the TV show “Neighbors".

Pullman has won two awards for his books. The first award was given to his book The Golden Compass. It won the Best Novel nominee from British Fantasy Society. The other book that won an award is The Amber Spy Glass, from world Fantasy for Best Novel nominee.

Phillip now lives a quiet life in Oxford, England where he writes, plays the piano and enjoys cups of cappuccino in his free time. He has a shed built just for his writing. He goes done there every day and writes three pages a day, and stares blankly into space. When he’s bored he enjoys trying to play short songs on the piano, and walk around his house. What Phillip enjoys the most is to go the small cafes and drink cappuccinos while watching people go by.
