Scott O'Dell

(1898 -1989)

       Scott O'Dell was born in Los Angeles on May 23rd, 1898. He moved a lot but he was never far from Los Angeles. While he was a child he lived in San Pedro, Rattlesnake Island. He lived at the foot of Mount Baldy. He lived in Julian near the Mexican border and in the Oriflamme Mountains. Scott graduated from Polytechnic High School in Long Beach, California. After graduating, Scott went to four different colleges, Occidental College, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Rome, and Stanford University. He moved from college to college because he felt he wasn't all that bright.

          Before Scott died he spent most of his time traveling, chopping wood and doing stone work. He also enjoyed gardening, although he had plenty of problems with the animals eating his vegetables. He was also still writing. He Quit smoking and because of this he changed the way he  wrote, he used to use a type righter but that reminded him of smoking so he decided to use yellow paper and a pen to write his stories. When he was writing he had a regular routine. He woke up at four, sat in bed till five, get up and walk the dog after that he would eat breakfast and finally start writing at seven and stop at noon.

          Scott had many other accomplishments other than writing. in high school he was a track star. When World war 1started he enlisted in the army but the war was over before he had to fight. After that world war 2 began and he enlisted him self in the air force because he wasn't drafted. When he wasn't protecting his country he was working at movie studios. He was a technical director for Paramount , a camera man for Metro-Goldwin-Mayer. He was also a book editor for a Los Angeles news paper.

               Scott has received many awards for his novels he has written because of his great ideas. He has received the Hans Christian Anderson award, the Regina medal, university of Southern Mississippi Children's Collection Medal, The Focal Award, a SLMSSENY and finally a Georgia O'Keefe book award. He has also won 13 other awards for specific books. His ideas for books come from many different things. Some come from life experiences, others com from where he lived, memories and history.
