French Writing Assessment
Daily Goals
We
are starting a large cross-curricular project on French Renaissance art. Art is an excellent way to study a historical
period because much of what is found in art represents the history of the time. The Renaissance is no different. The seventh grade students study the
Renaissance period in depth in their social studies classes; we will continue
their efforts in French class. Please note that French Renaissance painting
depicts mature subject matter such as nudity as a matter of art and therefore,
the utmost of maturity is expected throughout this project. ___________Please initial that you understand
this!
The project includes
the following: 160 points
- A power-point presentation responding
to the leading question.
- A replica painting of a work by a chosen
French Renaissance Artist.
- A brief presentation in French about
your painting.
- Assessment – a written composition
critiquing the work of another student.
- Reflection- a 2 paragraph written
reflection on the project is required.

Research – (In English) POWER POINT – You may work alone or with one
partner. Both people will receive the
same grade for the power point and the presentation of the power point.
- The question: What characteristics of society are
represented in French Renaissance painting?
- Your power point must thoroughly address this question
by using 10-15 power point slides.
- You must use only “bullet” notes for text on the
slides, no paragraphs.
- You must include visual examples to support your
main ideas.
- You must explore at least one French painter and
use his work to help support your main ideas.
- Research notes – must be turned in for credit on
this assignment. NO RESEARCH NOTES,
NO CREDIT. This is not an annotated
bibliography, clear citations are necessary.
- Please refer to project check list and rubric for
a clearer understanding of commitment.
- You must turn in a printed copy of the power
point.
- 40 points
The Painting – On canvas
- You have been commissioned to paint in the style
of your chosen French Renaissance artist.
You must choose an artist and study his work, his style, and his
composition.
- You are not Picasso; you need to try to emulate
the artist’s style as best you can.
Believe you are a painter in the time period, what would the work
look like? What colors? You may choose any French painter of the
time – some examples are Sebastian Bourdon, Philippe de Champaign, Claude
Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin, Simon Vouet, etc
- You will be using acrylic paint, a 9 x 12 canvas
board, and a copy of a piece of the artist’s work. I prefer that you do not choose a nude
for this aspect of the project.
This work will be displayed at Open
House on April 26th and is expected to be completed before that
time. Make sure to have a copy of
the work you want to try to copy to me by Thursday, April 5th.
