In
this book, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares,
there are four very different, 15 year old girls named Carmen, Lena, Tibby,
and Bridget; a pair of magical pants; and the girls’ first summer apart. Carmen, a girl with an outgoing and sometimes selfish personality,
is shopping in a used clothing store. Folded on the counter is a simple
pair of jeans. She buys them without trying them on and puts them on her
dresser at home. Carmen, Lena, Bridget, and Tibby are all different shapes
and sizes, from the hips down to their toes, but one day something magical
happens. On this day, Tibby, the follower, sees the pants and tries them
on. Next, Lena, the creative, shy, and beautiful one; tries them on. One
by one the amazed girls try the pants on, finding that the pants fit
astonishingly, all of them! Then, Bridget, the amazing soccer player who
is almost too outgoing and energetic, has a wonderful idea: as this is the
girl’s first summer apart from each other, they would send the pants
around from girl to girl over the summer and write letters to tell about
their stories, and adventures. The pants would keep them bonded
even though they were millions of miles away from each other, and even
more so than they thought as they soon find out . The summer of the
traveling pants would be the summer where they find that their friendship
is the most important thing they have, and even more so when they aren’t
near each other.
My favorite character is Bridget. She has a fiery personality and
isn’t afraid to show how she feels. On the summer of the traveling pants
she travels to Baja California in Mexico to go to a professionally run
soccer camp. In my opinion, Bridget has the most interesting adventures
such as running in a marathon and winning, playing soccer, swimming in the
warm waters of the cove, and instead on sleeping in the cabins she sleeps
on the beach. Although Bridget is my favorite character, I can relate to
Lena. She is quiet, shy, and holds her feelings sometimes inside of her.
She loves painting, and the arts. She is loving, kind and is also easily
hurt . All the characters in the book feel all the feelings that I have
felt at least once in my life such as feeling sad, lonely, afraid, angry,
and foolish.
I loved this book. It is wonderful. It is full of stories, dreams,
letters, and of course friendship. This book leaves you feeling like you have been
through a whole lifetime. Although the book is fiction, it seems as real
as life. This book doesn't play games. I
especially loved all the quotes throughout the book that separated the
chapters. They really inspired me. The quotes reflected either the next
chapter or the previous chapter. Sometimes the quotes helped you
understand the feelings of the characters. Some of the quotes were: “Today
is the tomorrow, we worried about yesterday” and, “If you feel
like you’re under control, you’re just not going fast enough.” This book is the perfect book for kids 11-19. I would definitely recommend this book to any one who likes: a vivid book that will stay with you a long time, a book that is funny, memorable, touching, and uplifting. This book was an outstanding fictitious that captures your mind and takes it away. It is really hard to escape from the magical and exciting stories, letters, and quotes throughout the book. This is an amazing book about four girls, a pair of magical pants, and a summer apart. |
