Principal’s Comments: Multi-Cultural Day was met with not a single negative comment. Savanna Hoffman, a representative from leadership, said the experience was eye opening and learned a lot about other cultures. Students reiterated that they heard a lot of positive feedback and found the Aztec Dancers very entertaining. In the coming years Multi-Cultural Day will be flip flopped with Career Day in alternating years.
Second Trimester results are out with 2/3 of all students earning honor roll status. Savanna Hoffman gets bragging rights as the 8th graders received the highest percentage (70%) of class participation on the honor roll. Kids in support classes are doing well. Mr. Gross highly values this program as he definitely sees a need to make services available to kids with academic needs. Next week is Honors Lunch!
Teacher Appreciation Luncheon is May 9th. In the past PTA has provided a self service lunch in the library. Mr. Gross suggested PTA provide a Thai Luncheon from a local restaurant as a result of last year’s success. May 6th is STAR Testing week which provides the ability to provide a longer than normal lunch to put on the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon. Cost to provide the lunch will be approximately $400.00 with a not to exceed cost of $600.00
Approved: Pam Sheppard, 2nd – Alix Fuzie, Unanimous Approval
An email will be sent out to the general membership to request Dessert donations for the luncheon. PTA will provide the paper products and drinks.
With Edmund Gross’ promotion to the CUSD office for next year and Ken Griest’s promotion to principal, applications are currently being reviewed to fill the vacant Vice Principal’s position. Currently 36 of those applicants are from outside of the district. An interview panel has been established to conduct the 1st level of interviews. Discussion about cost of living expenses when considering the job will be one of the topics on the agenda.
Treasurer’s Report: In Diane Stracuzzi’s absence, Mat Fuzie presented the official treasurer’s report. The Valentine Fundraiser brought in $912.78, Student Store $3649.75, and the St Patrick’s Dance $1630.50 before expenses. The Honor Roll pins are in. The 3 year supply cost $3108.11. Although, the yearly budget for academic awards is $3000.00 the cost of the pins will be spread out in the budget over the next 3 years. The Reserve Fund for the 2nd set of text books and the 8th grade graduation celebration will not be reduced as expected thanks to the efforts of Mr. Gross. Two out of the three new text books to be adopted for the upcoming year are almost free with the Algebra text book still up in the air. The ultimate goal is to continue to improve the Reserve Fund every year till we have one full calendar year of budgeted funds available.
Approved: Rachel Wahl, 2nd – Mat Fuzie, Unanimous Approval
A brief review of the St Patrick’s Day dance found the outside patio area a very popular addition to the dance format. The change in music due to the school’s policy on content was met with comments that it sounded outdated. Mr. Gross suggested that the students provide a listed of music suggestions and thought this would be an excellent Leadership project.
Old Business:
Discussion continues about transitioning to PTO from PTA. Rachel Wahl provided preliminary liability
insurance quotes to cover organization and activities. Rachel was going to work with Mr. Gross to
get hard quotes. PTA would like to use
Track uniforms needed at CMS were agreed to be paid for by PTA out of After School Sports Funds. Mat did a quick poling of key board members in between meetings and received the go ahead. $1500 to $2500 was budgeted for this expenditure.
Approved:
PTA is still looking for a Sports Booster
representative.
Lori Hightower wanted the PTA to be aware that parents were talking about the alcohol incident. It was felt that the general membership needed to be made more aware of the incident and that there were consequences for those involved in the incident. Mr. Gross responded that as Principal there needs to be a level of discreetness and assessment of the situation, notifying parents if any danger is prevalent. However, he also felt that kids are entitled to make mistakes and not be hung out for all to see. In our community we will have stumbles but problems tend to be blown way out of proportion due to what could be characterized as impossibly high expectations. Mr. Gross pointed out that the incident will be highlighted in several areas in the upcoming newsletter.
Alix Fuzie, as current volunteer coordinator, pointed out that Class Reps need to be filled for next year. At the next meeting current Board members will be polled to see where replacements need to be found. Also, preparations will need to begin for Registration Roundup for the 2008-2009 school year. A need was expressed to have current board positions provide clear duty statements to those taking over their positions.
Meeting was adjourned by Mat Fuzie.
Next Meeting: Friday, April 25, 2008 @ 11:30 in the Habitat
