Farmer Giles of Ham is a great novel written by J.R.R Tolkien. It’s about a man named Giles and his dog who is disturbed one night by a stupid giant. He gets rid of the giant and is a hero, but that’s only the beginning. Together they help save the land; well sortuv the dog is very cowardly so he runs away a lot. They face many challenges such as mad dragons, and stupid giants. My favorite character in the book was the blacksmith. He was always in a bad mood that gave me some good laughs. I think that  Tolkien’s point in the book is that everyone is brave at heart.

In the story everyone looks up to Farmer Giles when danger comes. That has happened to me in some of my sport games, where all of the pressure is on me and I think I can’t do it but I do. I don’t think that I have fought dragons or giants but you never know. I thought the book was really good and I would read it again if I had to.

My favorite part in the book was when Farmer Giles shoots the giant with a blunderbuss (big gun) full of metal nails and of other pieces metal. My least favorite part in the book was when the dog runs through the town saying that Farmer Giles is a hero, because it’s so boring. If I could change one part in the book I would make it longer. I think it’s to short, and it would be better if it was more “in depth.”

I would defiantly recommend this book to any who wants a short read. The edition of the book that I read contained the old manuscript plus the new manuscript. I thought that was cool because it gives you more to read. Anyone who is a J.R.R Tolkien fan will love this book.
