Over the summer, I read a really great book, called Ella Enchanted, by Gail Carson Levine. It is the funny and imaginative story of a girl who is under a spell where she must be obedient. She has to do whatever someone tells her to do. The story takes place in the make believe town of Frell. The girl, Ella, is the daughter of a wealthy merchant who travels all around the world. When he tells Ella she must go to finishing school, she runs away to find the fairy who cursed her. On her, way, she meets ogres, giants, and elves.
Another character in this book is Hattie, Ella's wicked stepsister who finds out Ella's secret of her obedience. She makes her do things for her, such as scrub floors. wash her dresses, or sew new clothing. Also, there is Ella's other stepsister, Olive. She is younger than Hattie, but still manages to get her to do things for her. Ella gets very fed up with them, but she has to do whatever they say, or she will start to be sick. Another main character in this book is Prince Charmont, prince of Kyrria, the kingdom that Frell was in. He is kind and caring, and helps Ella a lot in the story. Ella was my favorite character in this book because of her determination and clumsiness. In a way, she was a lot like me.
I enjoyed reading this book because I could relate to the characters. One similar experience to Ella's was when I was forced to do something I didn't want to. Someone was making me eat beans in my burrito and I absolutely can't stand beans. I can relate to how Ella felt when she had to do what someone told her to do. I loved all of this book but my favorite part was when Ella was teasing her wicked stepsister Hattie. I also liked it when Ella first found out she had fairy blood in her. I didn't have a least favorite part, I don't think, but I would want to change the ending a little bit.
Ella Enchanted is probably my favorite book I have ever read. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, but probably girls would enjoy it more. It is sort of a fairy tale, but not like Cinderella or anything. I loved it, and it's a great book.
